January 6th 09
Moms, Inc. of Bethesda convened for the first time in the new year last week. We are all very excited to be implementing strategies for another successful year working from home.
This month we heard excellent presentations from two members. The first was Linda Quinones who gave a mini cooking demonstration, highlighting several inexpensive but useful kitchen tools. The main point of Linda’s presentation, however, was the importance of the family meal to overall family well being. She gave compelling statistics to back up her assertion that making family meals a priority is one of the most important things we can do as working mothers. And, of course, it is easier to quickly prepare family meals if we are armed with the right kitchen tools!
Our other presentation was given by Debbie Norris, Ph.D., founder and Executive Director of Science for Health & Energy, Inc. Debbie introduced her brand-new CD, Meditation for Health: Introduction. The CD is available for purchase. However, if you’d like to participate in Debbie’s study on the benefits of meditation, she will eventually refund your money. Debbie ended her presentation leading the group in a five-minute restorative meditation session. We all left the meeting feeling great!
We also had an outside speaker, Barbara Cameron, come in to discuss Walk In My Shoes a non-profit organization that distributes new and gently used shoes to very poor children in the world — everywhere from Mexico to the Congo. The Moms, Inc. members were blown away by Barbara’s pictures and stories. We will be speaking with her further about perhaps making Moms, Inc. an official drop off point for donated shoes.
In addition to her non-profit organization, Barbara mentioned her own D.C. business in the Mount Pleasant neighborhood, Boveda Tribes, a store that highlights unusual items for the home.
We need member speakers for February and March.
It’s not too late to sign up if you haven’t spoken in a while. If you are a dues-paying member, contact Lisa Jo directly or leave a comment here on the blog and we’ll get you on the schedule.
Do you think Moms, Inc. of Bethesda should help out the Walk In My Shoes Global Project?
It seems like a natural fit for our organization but we’d like your input before we take further steps.
Happy New Year!
This month’s meeting concluded with a sincere desire to help each other grow our home businesses in 2009!
